Between My Apathy

I learned something about myself this weekend. I live most of my life apathetic towards what’s going on around me. I don’t let myself get affected by the ups and downs of life. I am steady and typically unaffected. Life, though, is experienced between apathy. It is when I am worried, elated, sad, scared,excited that I learn things about myself, friends and God. It is when you believe in something and take risks that you grow and live. I am sure that I developed this condition through a tumultuous childhood followed by a coping with stress at work. But part of growing up is learning when to let go of the negative lessons you picked up along the way. I need to be less steady and more passionate. I need to risk more and hide less. I need to allow myself to be affected.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately but as I mentioned earlier I really don’t put much thought into anything so it’s hard for me to think of things to write about. So, let’s try work…I work for a company called Courtyard Developments. What we do is develop and build seniors communities called Hyde Parks. Our current location is kind of our pilot, we have completed phase 1 which is 92 town homes and are now moving on to Phase 2 which is kind of the main focus of the site. Phase 2 is made up of a 35 unit apartment building and a 105 unit retirement residence called Immanuel House. The development process is long and tedious, you harass consultants to get the drawings done, then you apply to the city then you harass them to review the plans, then they ask you to change something, then you harass consultants to change it, then you harass the city to review it, then they ask you to change something else because the person reviewing the file originally is now retired and the new person wants things done differently. This can go back and forth for a while taking anywhere from 6 -30 months. We are now finally done with the site plan and moving on to the building itself. This is a big step and it was done in record time, for us, a whopping 12 months. I realize this may be the most boring post ever but its’ my life and now the next thing you read will be riveting thanks to me.

Do you ever here a song an instantly know that it’s your Jam? Usually for me I have to hear a song a few times before I really get into it. But this morning Home by Edward Sharpe and the Electric Zeroes (http://www.myspace.com/edwardsharpe)came on the radio and I was hooked. I don’t know if everyone has already heard of these guys before but it was my first time. I see a CD purchase in my future, that’s right I still buy CD’s!

A Blast From the Past

So, as I continue my blogging experiment, I tried to come up with some different aspects of my life that I thought would be interesting to vent/talk about. As some of you know I had a bit of a run at becoming an actual hockey player when I was younger. I spent most of my formidable youth training and trying to be the best I could be. Being huge at a young age helped me to turn heads at camps and have some success in moving up the junior ranks. I never really had any aspirations to play professionally I always just wanted to play and train as hard as I could. So if things worked out and I made a team that was always a bonus but was never really my goal. I never put too much thought into it, a recurring theme in my life. Anyways eventually things got stale, my coach was a dick and after being a healthy scratch in Hull I said fuck it, not exactly, I think I was praying with my family in an East side Mario’s. I decided that was it I was going home to figure something else out. All that being said I have put some miles between than and now (I’m married, I have a career, I own a house etc.) and I think it’s time for a come back. So this fall I will “hopefully” be trying out for the Carleton Raven’s. I realized, after reading an article about Mike Danton the CIS has no age limit and I was planning to take some classes at Carleton so it seemed like a perfect fit. Since my wife and I made the decision to go for it I have been doing some training and trying to get back into some sort of game shape. So far I have lost about 20 lbs and almost half of my body fat. I doubt my conditioning will be an issue by the fall.

It seems everyone has their own blog nowadays so why should I be any different. I thought starting my own blog would force me to take time to think about things and form an opinion. Too often, I brush things off before taking the time to decide what I think or how I feel. You will quickly find out that I am not that funny and probably have little to offer you in the way of insight but I do guaranty that there will be words.
